Programs - New Beginnings Furniture

| UPDATE 8-01-05 -
The New Beginnings Furniture program has been granted to TROSA (www.trosainc.org). TROSA is a nationally recognized drug and alcohol rehabilitation program based in Durham that has previously been providing contract staffing and furniture for sale at New Beginnings. They have agreed to allow other non-profit groups to sell furniture through the store as part of the grant provisions, and Shared Visions Foundation will continue to support this project through financial and strategic consultation. |
New Beginnings Furniture, a program of the Shared Visions Foundation,
is an earned income venture that generates revenue for local nonprofits that directly benefit communities in Durham and Orange Counties.
Located at 301 S. Duke Street in Durham, the new business opened on October 13, 2004 and is designed to be an easy-to-use, no-cost, fundraising tool for local nonprofits. We currently have 14 non-profit groups participating in the store.
The concept of New Beginnings is simple. Local agencies earn income through the sale of quality, used furniture either directly owned by a nonprofit or donated by an individual in the name of a specific nonprofit. To become a part of the program, a local nonprofit simply registers with the store by providing verification of its agency’s 501(c)3 status. If the nonprofit has quality furniture that has been donated to its organization, it may sell it through consignment in the
showroom at New Beginnings.
New Beginnings also provides a way for individuals in the community to support their area nonprofit(s) through the donation of used furniture. An individual can donate quality items to the store in the name of a nonprofit and the proceeds of the sale go to the designated agency. Documentation for tax credit is provided to donors. New Beginnings
encourages registered nonprofits to get the word out to their supporters so they can make donations in the name of area nonprofits. Newsletters and mailings are convenient formats to let people know of this opportunity to provide support.
New Beginnings also offers a voucher system for select service agencies who assist disadvantaged individuals establish homes in Durham and Orange Counties. Under this system, agencies will be granted vouchers that can be distributed to their clients. Clients can then use the vouchers toward the purchase of furniture at New Beginnings.
New Beginnings Furniture is staffed mainly by members of TROSA, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation agency located in Durham. Through the day to day operations of the store, members receive training in retail sales and management.

New Beginnings Furniture is open to the public Monday - Friday 10 am - 6 pm and Saturday 10 am - 4 pm.
Durham and Orange County nonprofits can register their agencies by calling call 919-682-1495 or emailing the store at nbfurniture@verizon.net.
